Optimal Tea Steeping Temperatures

Here are the water temperatures you want to use for steeping various types of teas:

  • Black Tea: 212 degrees fahrenheit (100° C)
  • Chaga Tea: 122 degrees fahrenheit (50° C)
  • Chai Tea: 212 degrees fahrenheit (100° C)
  • Chamomile Tea: 195 degrees fahrenheit (90° C)
  • Dandelion Tea: 200 degrees fahrenheit (93° C)
  • Earl Grey Tea: 212 degrees fahrenheit (100° C)
  • Green Tea: 180 degrees fahrenheit (82° C)
  • Guayusa Tea: 180 degrees fahrenheit (82° C)
  • Herbal Tea: 212 degrees fahrenheit (100° C)
  • Jasmine Tea: 180 degrees fahrenheit (82° C)
  • Lapsang Souchong Tea: 212 degrees fahrenheit (100° C)
  • Oolong Tea: 195 degrees fahrenheit (90° C)
  • Peppermint Tea: 212 degrees fahrenheit (100° C)
  • Pu-erh Tea: 212 degrees fahrenheit (100° C)
  • Purple Tea: 180 degrees fahrenheit (82° C)
  • Rooibos Tea: 212 degrees fahrenheit (100° C)
  • Spearmint Tea: 212 degrees fahrenheit (100° C)
  • White Tea: 180 degrees fahrenheit (82° C)
  • Yerba Mate: 150 degrees fahrenheit (66° C)

When you are steeping Green Tea, you want to let it steep for only a couple of minutes as it can become bitter if it is let to steep for longer. Alternatively, you can let Guayusa Tea steep for a while without the pitfall of it becoming bitter due to over-steeping.
